Free recycling decals are available from the Town of North Hempstead by calling 869-6311

The Village does not supply residents with recycling pails. Recycling pails may be purchased at most hardware stores.

Refer to the below chart to determine which items can be recycled and how to prepare them.

Recycling is to be placed at the curb on Thursday.

Paper and Cardboard
Recyclable Non-Recyclable How to Prepare
  • Newspapers & inserts
  • Magazines & catalogs
  • White & colored paper, junk mail & shredded paper
  • Soft cover books and folders
  • Brown cardboard & corrugated cardboard (must be clean)
  • Envelopes with plastic windows
  • Non-paper envelopes
  • Metallic paper
  • Cardboard drink containers
  • Paper plates and paper cups
  • Cardboard with wax
  • Styrofoam
  • Pack newspapers in brown paper bags or tie with twine
  • Flatten cardboard and tie in bundles
Plastics
Recyclable Non-Recyclable How to Prepare
  • All food, beverage, laundry detergent, person care product, cleaning supply containers bearing the numbers 1 & 2
    in the recycling triangle on the container
  • Bulk plastics such as toys, lawn furniture
  • All Styrofoam products
  • Plastic bags & wrap
  • Plastic shower curtains
  • Motor oil, paint, corrosive chemical, solvent & lawn care containers
  • Six pack holders & rings (cut rings open before disposing in regular trash)
  • Empty contents
  • Rinse all containers
  • Place in recycling can labeled for “Plastics, Metal & Glass” or in 30-55 gallon clear plastic bags
Metals

  • Food & beverage cans
  • Clean aluminum pans & foil
  • Household metal
  • Aerosol cans
  • Cans contaminated with pesticides or chemicals
  • Appliances
  • Electronic waste
  • Batteries
  • Rinse all containers
  • Place in recycling can labeled for “Plastics, Metal & Glass” or in 30-55 gallon clear plastic bags
Glass
Recyclable Non-Recyclable How to Prepare
  • All clear & colored glass containers
  • Mirrors, windows & auto glass
  • Light bulbs
  • Drinking glasses
  • Broken glass
  • Ceramics
  • Pottery or clay pots
  • Rinse all containers
  • Remove all caps & lids and discard in regular trash
  • Labels do not need to be removed
  • Place in recycling can labeled for “Plastics, Metal & Glass” or in 30-55 gallon clear plastic bags
